Branding Yourself

Personal branding is the process whereby people and their careers are marked as brands. Branding yourself can be further defined as the creation of an asset that pertains to you; this includes but is not limited to your body, clothing, appearance and knowledge contained within, leading to an indelible impression that is uniquely distinguishable.

How can you as a business person, self-employed person or an employee be branding yourself?

Had you ever met some situations as stated below:

1. Your bathroom got a leakage
2. Your computer could not be switched on
3. Your car’s engine was having some strange sounds when moving

In any of the above situation, who is the person that comes to your mind in the first place?

Just to use the above illustration to state why branding yourself is important.

Any person you first think of in situation 1 must be good at plumbing, in situation 2 must be a computer expert, and situation 3 must be someone who is very good at cars, yet they not necessarily be a plumber in situation 1, a computer engineer in situation 2 or a mechanic in situation 3.

There must be some reason that throughout times, they had established their personal expertise or skill sets in your mindset, that they would be the first person you think of in the above mentioned situation (as an example).

So, how is your personal branding in your friends’ perception? Or what is your business network perceived you as when they think of you?

Branding yourself is a very important aspect, not only in business but in your everyday’s life.

Whether you are a Mr.Nice Guy, a sporting and outgoing guy, or a lazy guy looking for overnight riches is somehow related to what you have been doing throughout a period of time.

How long does it takes to become an expert in a specific industry ?

How long does it takes to become someone who is very experienced in a specific industry ?

How long does it takes to become “somebody” in an industry that could be influencing people in the same industry ?

What does it takes to bring yourself into such a high level ?

Branding yourself in the right way, be persistent and persevere in one industry, be a specialized person or a specialist in that industry.

Normally, from a fresh graduates to a person who knows the in and out of an industry, specifically in the area you deal with, would take you around the first 5 years that you really get involved in.

Another 5 to 10 years will be needed in order for you to be more experienced in that specific industry.

As you look around, you may see that those influential “somebody” in the society are normally those with some age, mostly above 50 or 60 in age. Why ? Because of the time they spent and the experience they gained during that long time of involvement and participation in a specific field.

So, remember, first choose your own path, then be an expert in the industry you choose.
